Every 4th Sunday Bethany Presbyterian Church collects non-perishable food items to be donated to the Wayne County Food Pantry.
Non perishable items can be placed in the box. Items that are in need are: mustard, salad dressing, jam, spaghetti sauce, sugar, flour, pancake mix, syrup or any other non-perishable items. Any items would be greatly accepted.
The Wayne County Food Pantry has five sites located in strategic areas of the County to serve eligible County residents. The 5 food pantry sites can be found in Honesdale, Lakeville, Newfoundland, Lakewood, and Damascus.
The Program provides nutritious shelf staples which may supplement the applicant's food budget on a regular basis. These staples come from the US Government-donated foods and funding from both the State Food Purchase Program and County Government. The Program also relies on donations of food and monetary support from the community and fund-raising efforts such as WNEP-TV's "Feed-a-Friend" Program, Scouting Troops, 4-H Organizations, Local Churches, Schools and so on. ALL Donations stay in Wayne County and assist Wayne County residents. Typically, a monthly food bag may contain canned fruit, meat, vegetables, potatoes, spaghetti, etc.
Our own Judy Wells volunteers at the Lakewood pantry, which is located in Lake Como. They serve northern Wayne County. They typically prepare upwards of 40 bags of food for families of 1-2 people, 15 boxes of food for families of 3-5 people, and 5 boxes of food for families of 6 or more people. They see all kinds of people and familes come in. These families may be temporarily out of work, or they may have a handicap or disability or possibly just living only on social security. THEY ARE ALL GRATEFUL FOR WHAT THE PANTRY GIVES THEM.
Do they deserve it? It is not for us to judge, but keep in mind we ourselves may be in the same situation and would appreciate some help from our neighbor.
